Nintendo Direct June 2023 - brilokuloj - 06-21-2023

I don't really watch these but I know they're popular!

I got like 3 items into copying down a list of everything they announced before I realized I didn't care. Here's the things I care about:

  • They're actually doing Super Mario RPG??? I am ashamed that I actually want to play this. I don't like modern Nintendo games so I am trying to remain apprehensive. I feel bad because I actually like the art, always thought SMRPG felt too grungy for a Mario game, but that's also what gave it its unique identity, so maybe this is homogenizing it... Idfk.
  • Lucas showed me that there's another dog in the new Pikmin footage. I like the dogs
  • I only learned there was a new Nintendo Direct through furries going insane over elephant Mario, so there's that, I guess. Why does Yoshi look so plastic in this game

Would love to hear your thoughts.

I really like the art style of the new Mario game. It's weird and plastic-y, and I'm just now realizing that it reminds me of...Peggle? At least some of it. It looks like the perfect kind of game for couch co-op like NSMBWii. I wonder why they made Mario a straight-up elephant furry instead of giving him a costume like all the past animal power-ups, though. It feels really weird. I liked the stupid costumes.

The new Pikmin actually looks really good, I'm surprised. Definitely better than Pikmin 3, if only for the underground returning. The new Pikmin type looks like it'll be super weird and gimmicky, but in a way I think looks cooler than the ones introduced in 3.

I wish I could be excited for the new Mario Kart stuff, because autism, but it's depressing that everything they add is paid DLC for a game that was literally just ported from the Wii U and upcharged as a Switch game. It's really weird to me that so many last-generation games are being remade on Switch, actually, like the Luigi's Mansion game they're putting on Switch. The Switch never really resonated with or excited me as much as it seemed to with other people. I really liked the Wii U/3DS era, and at this point I'm just waiting to see what the next console will offer...but I have a feeling that'll be a while, since the Switch is still making money.
